ACCME: More physicians, others seeking CME activities
The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) 2012 Annual Report shows an overall increase in the number of physicians and nonphysicians who participate in continuing medical education (CME). More than 24 million physicians and other healthcare professionals were educated via the 130,000 educational activities offered by 2,000 accredited CME providers in 2012, according to the report.
The ACCME expanded its year-by-year data analysis, showing trends in CME revenue and expenses, and the numbers of educational activities, hours of instruction, and participants from 2005 through 2012. According to state and national data from that time frame, the number of physician and nonphysician participants in overall CME activities increased steadily. However, the data also show a decline in the number of physician participants in CME presented by state-accredited providers.
