AMA study: Physicians provide an economic shot in the arm
Physicians in 2012 helped boost the U.S. economy, creating close to 10 million jobs, generating $1.6 trillion in sales revenue, $775 billion in wages and benefits, and $65 billion in state and local tax revenue, according to an AMA study completed in conjunction with state medical associations.
The results “clearly indicate that creating an environment which would attract new and retain existing physicians to meet expanding healthcare demands will also have the added benefit of increasing the number of good jobs in the US and improving the health of state and local economies,” the study overview states.
