Ask the expert: When is it appropriate to delegate some of my leadership duties?
December 12, 2007
Leaders often struggle to delegate. However, the ability to delegate responsibility for day-to-day decision-making and problem solving is an important leadership skill. Delegating is appropriate for people who are self-reliant achievers-people who are competent and committed and who therefore do not need much direction. Delegating works best with:
- Seasoned experts who are ready for "job enrichment," so they can stay enthusiastic and invested in their role
- Issues like staff scheduling, because staff know what needs to happen and are able to make it happen using guidelines agreed upon by the group
- Task forces that have implemented a process and need to fine tune or maintain and update it
