Ask the expert: Where can I find already existing OPPE data?

OPPE doesn’t require medical staffs to reinvent the wheel—many OPPE data already exist throughout the organization thanks to standard tracking mechanisms. MSPs should work with medical staff leaders and the quality department to create an inventory of existing data systems that also may provide valuable information for OPPE. This list may include:

  • Transactional systems, such as those that track operating room start times, pharmacy and laboratory databases, and systems that track admissions and discharges
  • Medical record coding systems
  • Risk adjustment systems
  • Core measure data
  • Quality/case management interface systems
  • Departmental collection systems
