The best states for physicians

Personal finance website WalletHub recently ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on 11 metrics to determine where is the best place for physicians to practice. The metrics included mean annual wages, number of hospitals per 100,000 residents, malpractice award payouts, and current and future competition.

Overall, Mississippi was ranked as the best state for physicians. It has highest cost of living-adjusted mean annual wage for physicians, as well as the least competition with the fewest physicians per capita. It was followed by Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota.

The District of Columbia was ranked last due to its low cost of living-adjusted mean annual physician wages, high competition, and expensive malpractice liability insurance costs. It was followed by New York, Rhode Island, and Maryland.
