Class action lawsuit filed against Community Health Systems
October 16, 2014
Following a data breach in August in which Chinese hackers stole 4.5 million patient records, Community Health Systems (CHS) now faces a class action lawsuit brought by one of those patients.
The law firms Slack & Davis and Branch Law Firm filed the suit on behalf of New Mexico resident Briana Brito. The suit claims that CHS’s failure to implement and follow basic security procedures has resulted in the theft of Brito’s personal information. The data stolen in the data breach included Social Security numbers, addresses, birth dates, and phone numbers, but did not include medical data or credit card numbers.
This week the law firms met with other patients in Las Vegas and New Mexico who may potentially join the lawsuit this week. They have also spoken to patients in six other states about the lawsuit. A national campaign, mainly through television ads, is also in the works to inform and recruit additional patients to the lawsuit.
