Disaster privileges after superstorm

Editor's note: This article was orginally published in April 2013 and discusses how MSPs in New York credentialed and privileged physicians in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. As many hospitals nationwide begin (or have already) activated their disaster plans because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this article serves to point out lessons learned and also remind MSPs of the importance of their responsibility to credential and privilege practitioners in any situation.

Every few months over the past several years, different regions of the country have been blasted by powerful natural disasters-hurricanes and tornadoes, blizzards and tropical storms. Most recently, New York City fell prey to the battering of Superstorm Sandy, causing severe flooding, knocking out power, and forcing several major hospitals in the city to evacuate and shut down.
