Engaging hospitalists in medical staff functions

A common challenge for hospital leaders is engaging hospitalists in medical staff processes and functions, such as serving on committees, participating in quality improvement initiatives, developing privileging criteria, and so forth. They want this group of practitioners to become more involved at the organizational level rather than focus solely on providing excellent care to their individual patients. Medical Staff Briefing asked some directors of hospitalist programs for advice on how medical staff leaders can do a better job of bringing hospitalists into the fold. Two main directives emerged from these conversations: treat hospitalists as the professionals they are, and communicate, communicate, communicate with them.
