FSMB releases proposal for interstate compact

The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) recently released its finalized model legislation to create an interstate compact to provide physicians a streamlined process for applying for licenses in other states.

The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, if adopted, would allow participating state medical boards to share physicians’ credential and disciplinary history information with each other. The compact requires legislative enactment by at least seven states before it becomes effective and binding.

The FSMB previously approved a telemedicine policy stating that the location of the practice of medicine would be defined by the patient’s location. Physicians who want to provide telemedicine services to other states would have to obtain licenses in the patients’ states. The compact would assist physician obtain those licenses quicker.
