John Hopkins to pay $190 million for gynecologist who secretly filmed patients

To settle a class-action lawsuit filed by thousands of women, John Hopkins has agreed to pay $190 million to settle claims that a gynecologist used a pen-like camera to secretly film and photograph patients.

The physician, Nikita Levy, committed suicide last year, just days after he was fired from John Hopkins when a female co-worker reported her suspicions of Levy’s activities. According to investigators, 1,200 videos and 140 photos were found at his home stored on computer servers.

There is no evidence that Levy shared the photos and videos or that the hospital was aware of his actions. Despite agreeing to the settlement, an attorney for John Hopkins said the hospital should not be blamed for Levy’s action. A lawyer for one of the plaintiff’s said the hospital should have supervised Levy and known what he was doing.

Any other women who were privately examined by Levy can join the lawsuit, which already has about 8,500 plaintiffs. The settlement is subject to approval by a judge and victims will be able to testify at a September 19 hearing.
