Given the lack of economic alignments, shrinking or flat reimbursements, and emergence of new technologies, it is almost inevitable that there will be competition between physicians and hospitals. The real challenge is figuring out a way to successfully and simultaneously collaborate and compete. Physician-hospital competition is now a nationwide issue and affects how hospitals and physicians relate to one another. Combine that with numerous examples of physician-physician competition, and it becomes ever more apparent that handling competition is an essential skill for physician leaders.
