Letter from the editor: Take some time to rejuvenate

As I head to the mountains of New Hampshire for some well-deserved respite, I hope you all had an opportunity this summer to rejuvenate. Whether you took a “staycation” to tend to your garden and lose yourself in a good book or two or splurged on airfare and hotel fees to luxuriate in air conditioned splendor, we all need some time away from phones, computers, and other devices that beep and glow and demand our attention. Turn off your e-mail, put the “Do not disturb” sign on your door, and clear your mind. When you return to work, you’ll be fresh and ready to take on new challenges.

But it’s important to remember that getting away is not limited to the summer months. Maybe you lead a secret life as a roller derby champion, or you have a passion for ice fishing—whatever it is, take a little time every week for a mini-vacation to do what you love, even if it is only for an hour or two. This will help keep you from getting swept away in the barrage of e-mails, phone calls, meetings, and administrative “fires.”

I’d love to hear from you about what wonderfully selfish activities keep you going. Feel free to e-mail me at ejones@hcpro.com with your thoughts.

Best regards,
