MA coalition launches initiative to reduce medication errors

A Massachusetts coalition launched a state-wide initiative October 11 to reduce medication errors, providing a medication list for patients and providers and promoting tips for patients and their families on wise medication use.

The Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, jointly with the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS), are promoting Med List, an electronic template that promotes patient health and safety by

  • helping patients track their use of medications and supplements
  • assisting patients in discussing medication history with physicians
  • giving physicians more complete and accurate information about a patient's medication

"The distinguishing characteristic of Med List is that it can be an important tool for both patient and provider in reducing errors," MMS President Kenneth R. Peele, MD, said in a press release. "It allows the patient to be more involved and more of a partner in his or her health care, and it can facilitate and improve communication between patient and provider."
