Managing disruptive faculty members

Unprofessional or abusive behavior by residency program faculty toward residents has the capacity to disrupt an entire program if left unaddressed. Unfortunately, for any number of reasons, some programs allow this disruptive behavior to persist, leaving residents to shoulder the burden.

"As in most situations, it's a small percentage of the faculty who end up doing these things or not doing what they're supposed to do," says Franklin Medio, PhD, a former DIO and currently an independent GME consultant. "But the magnitude of the problems they cause far exceeds their individual numbers."
