Medical director pay varies depending on several factors

According to the Medical Group Management Association’s Medical Directorship and On-Call Compensation Survey: 2011 Report Based on 2010 Data, compensation for medical directors varied by specialty (internists and pediatricians are compensated the least at $7,500 per year, while medical directors in other specialties earned more than $50,000 per year) and practice ownership (hospital-owned or non-hospital owned). The report states that most medical directors spend between four and six hours per week on their medical directorship duties, which include developing policies and procedures, attending meetings, clinical peer review, community relations and strategic development.
