Medicare ACO program saves $384 million

In its first two years, Medicare’s Pioneer ACOs reported savings of $384 million, and patients reported fewer admissions, ED visits, tests, and procedures. "Beyond the early financial success of this model, we're also seeing important quality improvements," said Patrick Conway, MD, chief medical officer and acting principal deputy administrator for CMS said at a news conference. "Compared to their counterparts in regular fee-for-service or Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare beneficiaries who are in Pioneer ACOs for example report more timely care, and better communication with their providers,” Conway said.
