Most states lacking primary care physicians
January 8, 2016
With the exception of states in the Northeast and upper Midwest, states are falling below the recommended supply of active primary care physicians, according to the Association of American Medical College’s annual physician workforce report.
According to the recently released report, there are 91 active primary care physicians per 100,000 people on average across the country. Chief public policy officer Atul Grover, MD, Ph.D., said that it’s concerning when the number falls below 100 per 100,000 people. Mississippi scored the lowest with about 64 physicians per 100,000 people and several other southern states scored lowly. Massachusetts scored the highest with nearly 134 primary care physician per 100,000 people.
