New Illinois law aims to bring physicians out of retirement

In an effort to expand medical services to the state’s residents, a new law in Illinois seeks to make it easier for retired and inactive physicians and nurses to volunteer at free medical clinics.
Taking effect immediately, the law waives the licensure fee for the first 500 volunteer licenses for healthcare professionals such as physicians, physician assistants, dentist, optometrists, and nurses. After the first 500, additional volunteer licenses are eligible for fee waivers or reductions.
To take advantage of the new law, healthcare professionals must meet all licensure qualifications, may not currently hold a non-volunteer license, and must volunteer at a free medical clinic for no compensation.
