News and brief: Recent medical school graduate's age sets him apart

Sho Yano, a 21-year-old medical student, will become the youngest person awarded a medical degree from the University of Chicago this week. Yano will also be awarded a PhD in molecular genetics and cell biology, according to an article on tulsaworld.com.

Yano earned his undergraduate degree at the age of 12. Although he graduated summa cum laude, some medical schools would not admit him, concerned about someone that young being exposed to the pressure and rigor of medical school. The average first-year medical student is age 23. After he graduates, Yano will begin a residency in pediatric neurology.
