News and briefs: ASCs encouraged to measure physician performance

On-time starts and case volume are two popular metrics that help to measure a physician’s performance in the ASC setting, according to Sandy Berreth, the administrator of Brainerd Lakes Surgery Center in Baxter, Minn. In an article by Becker’s ASC Review, Berreth states that whether ASCs use metrics that are mandatory or expanding to ones that are “near and dear to their hearts,” the important piece is that they measure physician performance.

"It is the only way we know if we have been effective and if we need to change behavior," she says. "You don't know how well you are doing unless you can measure."

Along with providing information to use in budgeting and creating policies, the results of a physician’s performance can be put into the physician’s credentialing file.

Bereth and Ann O’Neill, director of clinical operations at Regent Surgical Health in Westchester, Ill., share their picks for 10 useful metrics ASCs should measure. The metrics, and the reasons for using them, are listed here.
