News and briefs: Bill aims to help employ Connecticut physicians

Connecticut legislators are scheduled to discuss a proposed bill to attract and retain more physicians for the state, according to an Associated Press report. The bill is a $10 million assistance plan that includes loans and grants to cover everything from the acquisition of new physicians to upgrading medical equipment.

Michael Krinsky, MD, president of the Connecticut State Medical Society, says the money will help physicians who open up a private practice maintain or add to on-staff physicians, most of whom represent small businesses. The money would be dispensed in medically underserved and high chronic disease sections of the state.

According to a 2011 study mentioned in the report, Connecticut office-based physicians make up approximately 52,000 jobs.
