Patient safety organizations: Are they a peer review protection tool or a physician performance improvement tool?

"When I talk about PSOs what seems to resonate are the peer review protections. And what I say is, look, this is not a mafia regime coming to the neighborhood to offer you protection," says Matthew Womble, executive director, Emergency Medical Error Reduction Group, a PSO based in St. Cloud, Minnesota. "That is kind of what it feels like, and if that is where we stop, then we are missing the point. The protection is only there to make sure you are using the information you are protecting appropriately and that appropriate use is the driver for improvement."
