Physician assistants: Is a title change needed?
In 2018, at the annual conference of the American Academy of PAs (AAPA), the House of Delegates voted in favor of investigating a potential title change for physician assistants (PA). The vote indicated only that alternatives would be explored, not that the PA title would definitively be replaced. This vote was a result of increasing concern that the term “physician assistant” does not accurately reflect the scope of care provided by PAs. The AAPA selected public relations firm WPP to lead this investigation, officially named the Title Change Investigation. Before the final decision is made regarding a title change, Medical Staff Briefing set out to further understand the role of PAs in modern healthcare and how a title change might affect that role.
