Physicians generating more revenue
The amount of revenue physicians generate for their hospitals is on the rise, according to data from a Merritt Hawkins survey of hospital chief financial officers. On average, a physician generated $1.5 million for his or her affiliated hospital, up from the $1.4 million reported in the 2013 survey.
Specialist physicians generated more revenue than primary care physicians. On average, a specialist physician generated about $1.6 million in revenue for his or her affiliated hospital, compared to the $1.4 million generated by a primary care physician. Orthopedic surgeons generated the most revenue, each bringing in an average of $2.7 million, followed by invasive cardiologists and neurosurgeons ($2.4 million each), and general surgeons ($2.1 million)
