Referral patterns of hospital-employed physicians

Researchers at Stanford University found that hospital-employed physicians were much more likely to refer patients to their hospital over other nearby hospitals. According to their study, based on 2009 Medicare data, hospital-employed physicians sent 83% of their patients to the hospital that employed them. This increased the chances the patient would be treated in a higher-cost, lower-quality hospital.
