Residents don't increase risk to patients

When residents assist during brain or spine surgery, the risk of complication or death does not increase, says a study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery. Researchers looked at more than 16,000 brain and spine surgeries performed from 2006 to 2012. When the data were adjusted to take into account patients’ general health and the severity of the condition, there was no increased risk to patients who had a resident assist in the procedure.
