Specialties with the happiest physicians

Dermatologists are the happiest of all physicians, according to the results of Medscape’s 2016 Lifestyle Report, which surveyed nearly 16,000 physicians nationwide. Thirty-nine percent of dermatologists reported being very or extremely happy at work. They were followed by ophthalmologists with 38%. Internist were the least happy at work, with 24% reporting being very or extremely happy.

The survey also inquired about happiness outside of work and the least happy were those in critical care with 50% reporting being very or extremely happy. Nephrologists ranked highest with 68%, followed by dermatologists at 66%.

A different study conducted by researchers at the AMA and Mayo Clinic sheds a different light on dermatologists. It found that burnout rates for dermatologists increased 24.7% from 2011 to 2014.
