Stanford program aims to improve work-life balance

The Stanford Department of Emergency Medicine is piloting a “time banking” program for its faculty to help them manage work-life conflicts. Physicians in the program, which is part of a two-year $250,000 pilot, earn credits for the time spent on task, such as mentoring, covering colleagues’ shifts, and serving on committees. They can then use the credits on work- and home-related services (e.g., housecleaning services, babysitting, and grant writing help). Physicians in the program report increases in job satisfaction, work-life balance, and the number of research grants applied for.
