Study: Physicians feel overextended, think more should be trained

In a survey of more than 20,000 physicians, the majority reported feeling overextended and hoped that steps would be taken to address the physician shortage.

In the survey, conducted for the Physicians Foundation, 81% of the physicians said they were overextended or at full capacity, which is up from 75% from the 2012 survey. Similarly, 72% of respondents said they believed there is a physician shortage and that the funding cap on graduate medical education should be lifted so that more can be trained.

On a more optimistic note, 44% said they had positive morale and feelings about the current state of the medical profession, up from 32% from the 2012 survey.
