Tip of the week: Dealing with Burnout: What physicians need to know before returning to work

When a physician experiences burnout, he or she often chooses to deal with the problem in private. Some leave the medical field seeking a different career path, whereas others choose to take a break from practicing medicine to regroup.

After that extended break is over, many physicians initially return to their practice feeling rejuvenated, but as time progresses they once again tend to feel the effects of burnout.

Experts say dealing with burnout is not just a matter of taking time off. Rather, it is about confronting the issue, making tough decisions, and dealing with the problems that cause burnout in the first place.
