Tip of the week: Delegate proctoring tasks

When the medical staff asks a department chair to assign physician proctors for a newly appointed medical staff member, he or she should delegate the responsibilities as follows:

  • Several non-physician reviewers from the hospital's quality department undertake audits both of the practitioners' documentation and of predetermined, specified clinical practices
  • The peer review committee monitors the outcomes information
  • Two physicians from the appropriate department, neither of whom is in partnership or practice with the newly appointed physician, perform concurrent proctoring of the physician's procedures and retrospective review of the final case record
