Tip of the week: Helpful hints for effective minute taking

Consider the following hints for good minute-taking:

  • Minutes should be written as soon after the meeting as possible while the issues are still fresh in your mind. Set aside at least one hour after the meeting to prepare a draft of the minutes and schedule adequate time on your calendar to follow up and complete the minutes.
  • Forward the minutes to the chairperson for review and editing while the meeting is still fresh in his or her mind (within a week of the meeting).
  • Follow up with memos so action can be taken.

These steps allow any concerns regarding contents to be raised before the minutes are forwarded to the relevant individuals and/or departments.
