The hospitalist movement has changed the dynamics of leadership. Traditionally, physicians who had upward of 20 years of clinical experience and were nearing retirement were chosen as leaders, sometimes regardless of their capacity to do the job well. Today, thanks to the under-40 crowd that is leading the hospitalist movement, those in the upper ranks are starting to realize that emotional maturity, interest in taking on a leadership position, and personality traits weigh more than clinical experience.
