Understanding OPPE, part 5: An OPPE system for communication skills

This month, we continue to design an OPPE system that could be used in your facilty by looking at medical record completion as a communication performance measure. The examples offered in this series are just that--examples. They may or may not be relevant to the challenges in your organization. Regardless of what performance metrics you choose for your medical staff, application of the following five-step process will help guide the design and implementation of your OPPE system. The five steps are:

1. A succinct statement defining the expectation of the desired performance

2. A clearly defined indicator of that performance

3. Pre-established targets of performance against that indicator

4. Timely feedback to the practitioner

5. A process to manage poor performance

Let's apply these five steps to using medical records completion as a measure of effective communication.
