The unification of GME training standards

In February 2014, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine entered into an agreement to transform the accreditation system for graduate medical education (GME) programs in the United States ("A Single Graduate Medical Education Accreditation System Ensuring Quality Training for Physicians and Improved Health Care for the Public," Boyd R. Buser, DO, The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, April 2014, Vol. 113, No. 4).

It is important for MSPs to understand some of the basic tenets associated with this transformation in GME in order to more effectively communicate with ­applicants and medical staff leadership in regard to education and training. Let's take a look at some of the facts.
