Unlicensed physician shut down

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia recently announced that a medical school graduate running a skin rejuvenation clinic in Vancouver has been prohibited from providing medical services.

Anita Fofie of Dermix Institute of Aesthetic Medicine had been under investigation by the college since 2012. In January, the British Columbia Supreme Court granted the college permission to search Fofie’s business and seized injectable cosmetic products used for treating wrinkles.

Although not licensed in Canada, Fofie says she finished medical school, did a surgical residency in Seattle, and was licensed in Washington until she moved back to Canada in 2012.

The crackdown on unlicensed practitioners in B.C. is part of a drive by health professionals to tell to residents — in 10 languages — that not only doctors and dentists, but also midwives, physiotherapists and naturopathic doctors must all be licensed.
