Concurrent/overlapping surgery: Is it happening in your facility?
Concurrent or overlapping surgery is not new; however, there are relatively few regulations or policy statements from regulatory agencies or professional bodies that specifically address this issue, other than those from CMS concerning reimbursement. Because of this lack of guidance, healthcare leaders need to know what major issues to take into account, either when introducing a concurrent/overlapping approach for surgery to their organization or when discovering it has been occurring without formalized guidelines.
