Don't forget the leadership standards when evaluating medical staff bylaws

There was a time when medical staff standards seemed simpler and they were all located in one place: the Medical Staff chapter of The Joint Commission's Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH). But things are different today. Standards that apply to the medical staff are scattered throughout the manual, and medical staff leaders and professionals don't have a clear road map to follow. There are disaster privileging standards in the Emergency Management section; there are standards relating to the credentialing and privileging of advanced practice professionals in the Human Resources section; and there are standards in the Leadership section that also apply to the medical staff. Three main areas of the Leadership section apply to the medical staff: conflict resolution, conflict of interest, and requirements for the president of the medical staff.
