Ask the expert: Our medical staff received a clean application that is just waiting for the medical executive committee and the board to review. Can we grant this physician temporary privileges?
Temporary privileges may be granted for up to 120 calendar days when a practitioner applying for medical staff membership and/or privileges is waiting for review and recommendation by the medical executive committee and approval from the board. To receive temporary privileges under these circumstances, the applicant must provide evidence of the following, which has been verified by the hospital:
- Current licensure
- Education, training, and experience
- Current competence
- Current Drug Enforcement Agency registration (if applicable)
- Current professional Liability insurance in the amount required
- Malpractice history
- One positive reference specific to the applicant’s competence from an appropriate medical peer
- Ability to perform the privileges requested
- Results from a query to the National Practitioner Data Bank
