Is physician burnout overblown?
Despite recent articles in The Daily Beast and The Wall Street Journal claiming physician burnout was on the rise, Dr. Suzanne Koven questioned whether the media coverage has exaggerated the problem.
Koven, a primary care internist at Massachusetts General Hospital, admitted growing frustration among physicians due to shorter patient visits and new regulations that required more paperwork. However, she argued that some news articles are being overly dramatic and misleading.
She further suggested that growing job dissatisfaction was not limited to just physicians but more media attention may be given to the field due to reader interest.
“I wonder if physicians are really more burned out than anyone else. Maybe we get written about because people find it fascinating—or even a little gratifying?—that highly trained people who do rewarding work with good job security and relatively generous pay can be as unhappy as everyone else,” Koven wrote.
