Hundreds of medical school graduates fail to obtain residency
In spite of a physician shortage, hundreds of medical school graduates failed to secure residencies this year, according to the National Resident Match Program’s (NRMP) annual report.
The NRMP, which matches graduates with residency programs, reported that 412 graduates went unmatched this year. This is an improvement over last year’s 528.
Some graduates’ failure to be placed in a program is simply due to a lack of open positions. This is the second consecutive year in which there were more graduates than available residencies. Others were not matched because there were too many other graduates applying to his or her specialty or geographic area.
