News and briefs: Family medicine is top AOA field for future physicians

Primary care is once again the most sought after area of healthcare employment amongst osteopathic physicians-to-be, based on results from the annual American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Intern/Resident Registration Program.

AOA Match results show family medicine as the most matched specialty with 433 filled positions– a 16% increase from last year’s match, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch section. Internal medicine had a 21% percent rise in matching residents.

AOA officials say the data suggest the two specialties will be better equipped to handle the physician shortage crisis. According to the MarketWatch article, the primary care physician shortfall is projected to reach 45,000 by 2020.
