Tip of the week: Set a plan for discussing subpar physician performance
Last week, we discussed which medical staff applications the medical executive committee need to discuss at its meetings. Applications with red flags are included on the meeting’s regular agenda. Another item that stays on the regular agenda is unresolved or significant physician performance issues.
When a significant performance issue is presented to the MEC, allocate a specific time frame to discuss it. If the issue is not resolved or a game plan has not been agreed upon when the allotted time is over, it is unlikely that continuing the discussion will lead to a decision. Cease the discussion for the time being and put the issue on the docket for the next meeting.
This week’s tip is from Medical Executive Committee Essentials Handbook, by Richard A. Sheff, MD; and Robert J. Marder, MD. Next week, we will look at another item to keep on the regular agenda.
