Tip of the week: Focus on credentials applications with red flags

Last week, we discussed the difference between a consent and regular agenda, both of which should be used to run an effective medical staff meeting. This week, let’s look at one issue that needs to stay on the regular agenda: Credentials committee recommendations on unusual/problematic applications.

The credentials committee can have a consent agenda for clean applications, and the medical executive committee can put these clean applications through an expedited review and approval process. Don’t focus the MEC’s scarce time on routine credentials applications. However, applications with red flags should be reviewed and discussed.

This week’s tip is from Medical Executive Committee Essentials Handbook, by Richard A. Sheff, MD; and Robert J. Marder, MD. Next week, we will look at another item to keep on the regular agenda.
