More veterans to seek help at private hospitals
In light of allegations of falsified records to cover up delays in care, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will allow more veterans to seek healthcare at private hospitals.
While the VA attempts to improve care at its own facilities to shorten wait times, veterans will be able to seek treatment at private clinics and hospitals in areas where the department is unable to expand capacity to meet needs, according to a statement released by VA Secretary Eric Shinseki.
Last year the VA spent $4.8 billion at non-VA hospitals and clinics on medical care for veterans, according to an agency spokesperson. At this time, it is unknown how much the expansion of service will cost.
