Cincinnati hospitals on the hook for spine surgeon
Four lawsuits were recently filed against UC Health, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and West Chester Hospital for allowing a spine surgeon perform unnecessary procedures. According to the Cincinnati Business Currier, Atiq Durrani, MD, was indicted on 46 federal charges in 2013, including allowing other employees to write Oxycodone prescriptions on orders he pre-signed, knowingly leaving a guide wire inside a patient during surgery, and billing private and public healthcare benefits programs for fraudulent services. Durrani fled the country before his trial begin.
The lawsuits against UC Health and West Chester Hospital allege the hospitals negligently credentialed Durrani and allowed him to perform dangerous/unnecessary surgeries. These two lawsuits also call for the court to hold the members of the board and executives at UC Health and West Chester Hospital responsible for Durrani's actions.
