Physician leaders' role in preventing burnout

Physician leaders aren’t doing enough to address physician burnout, according to a survey conducted by Studer Group. The survey conducted late last year anonymously surveyed more than 350 practicing physicians and found that 54% said their leaders were not actively taking steps to treat and prevent burnout.  Ninety percent of respondents said they experienced symptoms of burnout and nearly two-thirds of them said they have considered leaving medicine.

According to respondents, the top factors that contributed to burnout were:
•    Psychological challenges (e.g., disconnect from patients and community, loss of control, and too many changes too fast)
•    The healthcare environment (e.g., ICD-10, Meaningful Use, and pay for performance)
•    Practical hurdles (e.g., access, staffing, and time)
