News and briefs: Physician compensation tied to locale and experience

A physician’s location on the map and in the department rankings are the two major factors in how they are compensated in academic settings, according to a recent Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) report.

The MGMA report entitled, “Academic Practice Compensation and Production Survey for Faculty and Management: 2012 Report Based on 2011 Data,” shows discrepancies in compensation for physicians in academic settings situated in different parts of the U.S. The rank of the physician (i.e., a professor vs. an associate care professor or physician with more experience vs. less experience) was the other major factor contributing to compensation, according to a HealthImaging article.

According to the article, more than 20,000 faculty physicians and non-physician providers and approximately 2,000 managers were used as data in the report.
