News and briefs: Tetris-inspired game teaches physicians about sepsis

Stanford University School of Medicine physicians are encouraging physicians to utilize Septris, a new Web-based video game they developed to help physicians test their knowledge of sepsis and improve the treatment of patients with the condition.

The game mimics the classic video game, Tetris, with the images of two patients slowly moving to the bottom of the screen indicating that their condition is worsening, according to a recent American Medical News article. Physicians must make timely medical decisions, including administering proper antibiotic to help improve the simulated patient’s condition. The game can be played on a computer, tablet, or mobile phone.

Every year, 750,000 Americans develop severe sepsis with as many as half dying, according to the National Institute of General Medical Studies.
