The wrong way to give feedback
August 14, 2015
Providing feedback is essential to improving performance but can do more harm if presented the wrong way, according to a column appearing in the Harvard Business Review. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, PhD, a professor of business psychology at University College London and a faculty member at Columbia University, outlined the following key indicators of harmful feedback:
- It isn’t increasing the self-awareness of the recipient
- Not enough negative feedback is given to let the recipient know what he or she is doing wrong
- It isn’t backed up by data
- A meaningful narrative isn’t presented with the feedback
- It isn’t personalized to the recipient’s personality
